Imagination + Rationalisation

30 Jul

Imaginative though is found in a persons visual world. It draws from your own experience and is mostly unstructured and to an extent aimless. However when used along side the more logical approach of rational thought is of the designers greatest cognitive assets.

Artists make use of the imaginative cognitive properties of drawing to explore their concepts and ideas. As mentioned earlier, this process can be removed from reality but holds value as an explorative and evolutional tool. To further understand the benefits drawing brings to the design process we investigate the study of drawing. There is plenty of literature available on the subject of drawing, as it still forms the foundation of any art practice, from painting and sculpture to more modern medias such as vector graphics, all artists use drawing as the most basic form of communication and visualisation.

One book I have found particularly useful is Design Drawing by Francis Ching.
